Autism: The Reality

Next Monday, Vince and I are going to have what’s called a Collaborative IEP meeting.  This is a meeting where everyone who has been involved with Debbie and everyone who will be involved with Debbie will be meeting to discuss the future of her education. We are moving Debbie from her home school to an autism program at an elementary school down the street, which is why a meeting of this magnitude is necessary.

Last week she had a Verbal Map assessment done.  This assessment finds out the barriers that are preventing/impeding communication.  Deb’s speaking skills range from 18 to 30 months with significant deficits in basically every area of the test.

I know we are doing the right thing.  The program will have a very specific, skill based plan for Debbie and it includes ABA therapy…BONUS!  Buuuuuutttt…it hurts.  It hurts reading the black and white words that describe her and her deficiencies.  I will get over it.  I will move past this.  And we will all be better off for it.  Right now though, I hurt.
